DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: January 1, 2011

RATING: 5 STARS

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
I know I am a little behind on the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE wagon (okay, actually way behind), but let me have my fangirl moment.  LAINI TAYLOR IS A GOD SHE IS SO BRILLIANT WHY DID IT TAKE ME TWO WHOLE YEARS BEFORE I GOT MY HANDS ON THIS BOOK AND READ IT THANK GOD I FINALLY DID!(!!!)  Thank you.  I will now attempt to be composed throughout the remainder of this review; however, I make no promises.

At the beginning of the book, I was having an incredibly hard time.  So many of the character's names started with the letter 'Z' that I was getting them all mixed up and confused.  The more I read though, I was able to learn more about each person, which made it easier to tell them apart.  I ended up falling in love with each and ever character.  I was able to see all of them develop emotionally, and they were crafted with amazing individuality and had such great personalities.  Taylor's descriptiveness made it to where I could clearly form images in my mind of how the characters looked.  All I can say is, please let me have blue hair like Karou.

Taylor took a classic good versus evil, forbidden love, fantasy story and put such fantastic twists in it.  Just when I would start to get comfortable with the story, BAM, she threw in another surprise.  The feelings of shock and disbelief I would feel when there was a huge twist in the story was majorly apparent in my face and in the way I would gasp.  People would ask if I was okay, only to have me grunt back at them and continue reading.  I would not put up with any interruptions while in the process of reading this book.  This novel is the absolute perfect example of what a page-turner is.  It won't matter if you need to go to sleep because you have to be up for work in six hours, you will not want to put this book down.

In short, if you have not read DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, then what are you waiting for?  Seriously, READ IT NOW!

Teaser Tuesday - AFTERWORLDS by Scott Westerfeld

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly post that contains a teaser, or excerpt, from a book that I am currently reading, have recently read, or just really enjoyed!  This week's Teaser Tuesday post features AFTERWORLDS by Scott Westerfeld which was released in September of 2014.
The Angelina Jolie Paradox applies.

"The what now?"

Sagan cleared his throat.  "You know when you're watching a movie starring Angelina Jolie?  And the character she's playing looks just like Angelina Jolie, right?"

"Um, yes.  Because that's who she is."

"No, she's a regular person in that world, not a movie star.  But the other characters never mention that she looks exactly like Angelina Jolie.  No one ever comes up to her on the street and says, 'Can I have your autograph?'"

"Because that would mess up the movie," Carla said.

"Exactly.  So when you cast Angelina Jolie in a film, you're creating an alternate universe in which actress Angelina Jolie does not exist.  Because otherwise people would be noticing the resemblance all the time.  This is what I call the Angelina Jolie Paradox."

"You know, Sagan," Carla said.  "You could have named that paradox after any movie star."

"True.  But as the paradox's discoverer, I have chosen Angelina Jolie, as is my right."

About WHATEVER LIFE THROWS AT YOU:

Life loves a good curveball…

Seventeen-year-old Annie Lucas is too young to remember her dad’s glory days as a pitcher for the Yankees. So when her father is offered a coaching position with the Kansas City Royals, Annie is intrigued to see the baseball side of her dad. Of course, knowing he’ll be a mentor to hot young rookie pitcher, Jason Brody, certainly makes it more enticing.

After an awkward first meeting with “Brody” involving very little clothing and a much-too-personal locker room interview, Annie’s convinced she knows Brody’s type: arrogant, self-involved, bossy. As her dad grows closer to the pitching phenom, the friction between Brody and Annie increases. But when opening day arrives and it looks like both her dad and Brody may lose their dream jobs, Annie steps up and offers support. She and Brody call a truce that grows into friendship—and beyond. Falling for a rising star who’s quickly reaching a level that involves rabid female fans is not what Annie would call smart, except suddenly she’s getting hints that maybe this crush isn’t one-sided after all. Could someone like Brody actually fall for a girl like her?

Whatever Life Throws at You by Julie Cross Excerpt:

He eyes me skeptically. “What kind of article?”

“It’s for Sports Illustrated,” I say without hesitation and then quickly realize that I don’t look nearly old enough to be a real reporter for a huge publication. “I’m an intern,” I add.

The skepticism falls from his face and he looks nervous, which gives me a boost of confidence. I walk closer and pull out the chair in front of the locker beside his, propping my feet up on the bench across from me. “Frank Steadman said you’d be willing to answer a few questions.”

His mouth falls open, and he looks down at his towel and then back at me. Water drips from his hair and off his dark shoulders. “Um…okay,” he says. “Mind if I get dressed first?”

I wave off his concerns, my face heating up, blowing my confident cover. But him getting dressed might allow enough time for Dad to return, and I’d rather not have to deal with that. I duck my head down, letting my hair hide my cheeks and flip open the first page of the notebook. “This will just take a minute… So, you’re nineteen? And you’re from Texas?”

“Chicago,” he corrects.

I had no idea where he was from but figured it sounded better if I pretended to know. I write down this information and then search my brain for some more questions. “Does the wind in Chicago affect your curveball? Do you throw into it or against it?”

He gives me a funny look. “I…well…I just throw toward home plate.”

My face gets even hotter. “Right, kidding. What’s your favorite color?”

“Orange.”

I take my time writing orange in really big loopy cursive while I think of my next question. “What are your opinions on sushi?”

His forehead wrinkles like I’ve just asked him to publicly declare a political party. “Raw fish and seaweed? I think it’s best eaten while stranded on a desert island with no other options.”

“Very diplomatic.” I scribble down his answer. “How many strikes have you thrown in your career?”

“Don’t know,” he says. “Do people actually count that stuff? Before the majors?”

“Some of them do,” I say, though I have no idea. “If you could be any magical creature in the Harry Potter series, which would you choose?”

“You said this is for Sports Illustrated, right?”

“Yeees, But it’s the…kids’ edition.”

“Oh, right.” He scratches the back of his head. “I guess maybe one of those elves.”

“A house elf? Seriously? They’re slaves.” I shake my head. “Why would you want to be an enslaved elf? They can’t even wear clothes.”

He grips his towel tighter and releases a frustrated breath. “Fine, I’ll choose an owl. That’s what I’d want to be.”

I snort back a laugh and drop my eyes to the page again.

“What? What the hell’s wrong with being an owl? They’re smart, they know geography and shit like that.”

“Owls in real life are actually pretty stupid. But no big deal, I’ll just relay that message on to the children of America. Jason Brody, temporary Royals pitcher, wants to be an owl when he grows up because they know geography and shit like that.”

Okay, I’m getting way too into this fake reporter role.

“Who says this is temporary?” he snaps.

“Your two-way contract.” Isn’t that how Dad explained it? He plays a few games then goes back to Triple-A, all without signing a real major league contract.

He yanks a pair of jeans from his locker and then grabs a bundled up orange T-shirt. “Well, I plan on kicking some ass on Opening Day and making this a permanent gig.”

“I think you need a reality check,” I say. “One game isn’t going to be enough--”

“Annie, what the hell are you doing?”

I leap off the bench and turn around to face Dad and Frank standing about five feet from me. “Introducing myself to your new pitcher.”

“Brody, what are you doing here, son?” Frank asks. “We’re off today.”

“Just getting in some cardio and weights.” His gaze darts from me to Dad to Frank. “I was just finishing up this interview for Sports Illustrated. The kids’ edition.”

“Well, we won’t keep you from getting your clothes back on, then,” Frank says, like he’s trying not to laugh. “And just for future reference, all interviews will go through the team’s publicity department so no one will be wandering in here, surprising you. Savannah will meet with you tomorrow to discuss publicity.”

Dad moves forward and extends a hand to Jason Brody. “Jim Lucas, nice to meet you, son. I’ve seen your spring training videos. You’ve got some real talent. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

Brody shakes Dad’s hand, his eyes still on me.

“And this is my daughter Annie,” Dad adds.

Brody glares at me. “Let me guess—you don’t work for Sports Illustrated?”

Your heart beats only with their permission.

Everything changed on The Day.  The day the windows shattered.  The day the power stopped.  The day Dol's family dropped dead.  The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.

Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power.  Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.

She's different.  She survived.  Why?

When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions.  While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son.  But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence.  It's a conspiracy.

Within the Icon's reach, Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas discover that their uncontrollable emotions -- which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses -- may actually be their greatest strengths.

Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers the first book in a heart-pounding series set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts -- in order to save the future.
If you were to ask people what my most identifiable trait is, then they would probably tell you that I literally always have a book with me.  It doesn't matter if I am going to the store, driving down the street, or going to the zoo, I never leave home without at least one book.  Now, with this being said, sometimes I get into reading slumps where I don't even want to look at a book, let alone read one.  This recently happened to me about six months ago, and the book that brought me out of that reading slump was BEAUTIFUL CREATURES.  I absolutely loved The Caster Chronicles, and I devoured the series.  So I'm sure that you can imagine my excitement when I found out that Margaret Stohl, one of the co-authors of The Caster Chronicles, had written her own series; however, I ended up being disappointed in Stohl's solo career.  While I didn't hate ICONS, I certainly did not love it either.  The ideas surrounding ICONS was interesting.  I enjoy dystopian/apocalyptic fiction immensely, but the opener to the Icons series seemed generic.

The main character, Doloria, was incredibly annoying.  Dol seemed to focus on all of the wrong things.  I did, however, enjoy Dol's best friend, Ro, and her not quite friend but not quite enemy, Tima.  They were fun characters that brought life to the book and made it enjoyable by adding some much needed humor.  It was interesting that even though I knew who the "bad guys" were, I still found myself sympathizing with them.  The actions of the Ambassador and those she was leading seemed logical, and I was able to understand why she was doing what she was.

ICONS was a bit lengthy, which made me get bored with it several times.  The pacing was very slow, and I think it would be possible to reduce the length of the book by a third and still have the story make sense.  While I will not be rushing to the bookstore in order to buy the next book in the series, I will not turn my nose up at it if I am given the opportunity to read it.  ICONS was a little ho-hum for me, but I am still interested in what will happen next.

Join forces with a parallel universe.

Dark forces, magical creatures, and the world Lil thought she knew collide when a dream transports her to the strange world of Orenda.  Stunned and terrified, Lil comes face to face with her doppelganger, Willow, who possesses the ability to travel between the two worlds.  Everything Lil knows logically says that Orenda can't exist, but a small clue may be proof that it was more than an ordinary dream.  With the threat of her sister in danger, Lil crosses dimensions but it may cost her even more than she bargained for.

A sword wielding girl, the eternal suit, and a parallel universe come together in this action-packed Young Adult fantasy adventure that will keep readers of all ages turning the pages.  Orenda is the first novel in the Orenda series.
Looking at the cover for ORENDA, and reading the synopsis, made me think that this was a book I would really enjoy; however, almost everything about this story was just wrong.  ORENDA moved extremely quickly, which meant that Ruth Silver was unable to set up either of the worlds.  Everything in Orenda is supposed to be opposite from what is in the real world.  This idea intrigued me, and I would have really loved to see the drastic differences, but was unable to do so.  Because the novel moved so fast, it was also easy to get confused as to what character was speaking or who was doing what unless it was clearly stated.

The characters were severely underdeveloped.  I saw no change in them from the beginning of the novel to the end.  I enjoy being able to tell when a character has grown and learned from all of the experiences he/she has gone though, but Silver did not provide this.  There was also no difference from the initial characters and their doppelgangers.  Everybody seemed to act and speak the same way, so at times it was hard to differentiate between them.

Silver had a wonderful idea for ORENDA; unfortunately, it just was not executed to the full extent that it should have been.  I did encounter a few passages that were humorous, but it was not enough to save the novel.  The cover for ORENDA is absolutely beautiful, it is what first drew me to the book, but it is very misleading.  It gives me the impression that Lil can see Orenda through the river/pond she is looking in, or perhaps even use the body of water to travel to the world, but neither of these possibilities are true.  Silver has authored several novels, and I am open to the idea of giving another a try.  She seems to have good concepts, and I would like to see whether or not she is able to carry them out fully in a different novel.

Cora Carmack is one of my favorite New Adult authors, and I am so excited to be able to share the cover for her new New Adult Paranormal Romance book, INSPIRE that comes out December 15, 2014!  It is absolutely beautiful!  But enough of me gushing over it, y'all can see it for yourself now!

About INSPIRE:

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

About Cora Carmack:

Cora Carmack is a twenty-something writer who likes to write about twenty-something characters. She's done a multitude of things in her life-- boring jobs (like working retail), Fun jobs (like working in a theatre), stressful jobs (like teaching), and dream jobs (like writing). She enjoys placing her characters in the most awkward situations possible, and then trying to help them get a boyfriend out of it. Awkward people need love, too. Her first book, LOSING IT, was a New York Times and USA Today bestseller.

Undertow (Undertow #1)

by K.R. Conway

Release Date: 10/18/13

Summary from Goodreads:

Luckless Eila is unknowingly the last of her kind: Rare. Gifted. Breakable. Stunning Raef is her kind's historic enemy: Soulless. Lethal. Lost. A legendary death 160 years before would set their lives to collide, forcing a beautiful killer to become a savior, a simple wallflower to become a warrior, and ruthless destiny to become a death sentence.

SUMMARY:
High school senior Eila Walker knows that good luck skips over her like an Easter Bunny on Speed. So when she inherits her grandmother's million-dollar Cape Cod home, she is downright shocked. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself.

A self-proclaimed loner and previous-social reject, Eila thinks she's hit the jackpot when drool-worthy Raef O’Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow. But being hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow slams the brakes on bliss – especially when Raef storms to her aid with coal-black eyes and iron-like strength.

Eila, entirely freaked, demands an explanation and Raef comes clean, revealing that neither of them are average humans but rather the genetic remnants of an angelic pissing-match gone wrong. Eila supposedly can channel the power of human souls, while Raef is quite adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila’s grandmother was one kick-ass warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA.

Now sought by Raef’s own family for her destructive ability, Eila must trust him to watch her back. But when a quest for information goes terribly wrong, Eila is suddenly left with only two options: become a weapon for the enemy or follow in her Gram’s fearless footsteps to save those she loves. Unfortunately she needs a willing enemy to ignite her suicidal energy and the only one she trusts has been guarding her butt and scorching her lips.

Guest Post

Are your books pure fiction or are some aspects inspired by your own life or someone close to you?

The series is based on a REAL version of Cape Cod. In fact, one of the characters owns an ice cream shop named The Milk Way. While “The Milk Way” is fictitious, it is 100% based on Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville (a REAL town, were fictional Eila lives). Four Seas knows they are in the book and they host book signings. Other things in the book that are real to Cape Cod (so you can basically visit here and do all the things that Eila and her crew do) are:

1.     Eila’s house – The home the main character inherits, and thus sets off the chain of events for UNDERTOW, does exist in the historic area of Centerville, not far from Four Seas Ice Cream. It used to be owned by a friend of mine and we hung out in it all the time when we were young. She now resides in Hong Kong as a pilot, so we catch up on Facebook and she gives me more secrets about how the house was built. FYI – don’t go knocking on the door, because someone else owns the house now.

2.     Barnstable High School – Totally real and totally cool public high school that does some crazy thing. The students and faculty know they are in the novels (and even decided to begin building their own book trailer based on the series), so they allow me to come in and walk the halls as needed to make sure I stay true to the story. And yes – it is so huge that I need a GPS to find my way out. 2000+ students go there. Their award winning theater department became part of a major TV network series known as High Drama a few years ago. American Idol contestant Siobhan Magnus was a student there.

3.     The Jeep Subculture – Again, totally real. On Cape Cod, Wranglers are the most beloved vehicles of all. Most families have one, and if you drive one, other Wrangler drivers will wave to you when you pass each other – like Harley riders do. And yes – you can drive them out onto some of the beaches (MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH ONES!)

4.     Witch Balls, The Crimson Moon, and Eila’s Bracelet – All real. Witch Balls are made at any one of our beautiful, glass-blowing shops (and yes – you can watch them actually blow glass, which is so cool). The Crimson Moon was based on The Lavender Moon, which is no longer in business. It was owned by a real coven of witches and when you would go in there, you could buy healing stones, herbs, crystals, oils, etc. Don’t worry – Dalca didn’t work at the real version! Eila’s bracelet is a staple of Cape Cod and there are several variations, though the original is simply called a Cape Cod Bracelet. They come in various sizes, so having a two-year-old with one is not unusual. The ball screws the bangle together, which means that sucker ain’t coming off, so don’t get it caught on anything or your arm may go with it.

5.     Town Neck, the Bonfire party, and the infamous bridge – All real, though I did take a few creative liberties. So, Town Neck beach is part of the town of Sandwich. It has the boardwalk, just as described, and the long beach at the end, AND, yes, the river. Kids can jump from the bridge (yup, I’ve done it too, and IT IS FREEZING). However, you cannot drive a car out on Town Neck and you are not supposed to bonfire there – all those things can be done on SANDY NECK or NAUSET (where Raef hunts), so I kinda sorta blended the two beaches.

6.     Barnstable Harbor and the Ferry – Totally true and yes, you can sit and people watch. You can also catch a Cape Cod Baseball League game in the nearby field. The Cape Cod League is famous because so many players get called up to the Majors.

About the Author

I have been a journalist for 15 years and serve on the Board of Directors for the Cape Cod Writers Center. I also drive a 16-ton school bus because I am ENTIRELY NUTS.

In addition to working jobs that should come with a warning label , I hold a BA in Psychos (Forensic Psych), torment the tourists about Jaws, and occasionally jump from the Town Neck bridge in an attempt to reclaim my youth.

I live on Cape Cod with two smallish humans who apparently are my kids, my fishing-obsessed husband, two canines (adept at both flatulence and snoring), and a cage-defiant lovebird that sleeps in a miniature tent. Nope - that's not a type-o. The bird is quite the indoor camper.

Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop

Since 1982, the American Library Association has been making the public aware of the side effects that result from banning books.  September 21-27, 2014, is an entire week dedicated to raising awareness and educating people about banned books.  Books that some of us read every day and don't give a second thought about, books that are very important to our society, books that have the ability to speak for someone who cannot speak for themselves.  This is what is being banned across America.  I was very surprised when I looked up lists of banned/challenged books, and honestly, I was angry.  I realize that some of the books on the list include mature content, but there are kids and young adults LIVING mature content every day of their lives.  A lot of these young people feel completely alone, but if they had access to a book that deals with the same events that they are going through, it could very possibly help them.  In Ellen Hopkins' RUMBLE, Matt's brother, Luke, commits suicide because nobody in his school can accept that he is gay and they bully him constantly.  Matt's school is trying to ban the book THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, but Matt makes a really good point.
Charlie, the main character in PERKS, could have spoken for Luke when nobody else did.
Books have the power to speak for people who need it.  Who are we to take this away?

For more information on banned/challenged books, visit the American Library Association's website.
